The Graduate College of Education, University of Massachusetts Boston seeks applicants for a tenure-track or tenured position (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) in its Higher Education doctoral program. Of particular interest are candidates with expertise in one or more of the following
areas: leadership, finance and economics of higher education, faculty and academic workplace issues, sociology of education, or the study of community colleges.Responsibilities - (1) Support current efforts to enhance faculty and graduate student research; (2) Teach doctoral-level courses in higher education administration; (3) Carry out an active research agenda that makes significant contributions to the field of higher education; (4) Connect doctoral students to national networks for mentoring and professional development; (5) Chair and serve on dissertation committees; and (6) Contribute service to the University’s urban mission, to University and Departmental committees, and to professional associations.
A successful candidate at the associate/full level may also be considered for chair of the Department of Leadership in Education and/or director of the Higher Education Administration Doctoral Program, depending on experience and interest.
Qualifications - At the assistant professor level, candidates must possess an earned doctorate either in higher education or a related field, and demonstrate the development of a promising research agenda. Evidence of effective teaching experience is strongly preferred.
At the associate or full professor level, candidates must possess an earned doctorate either in higher education or a related field, and must demonstrate excellence in teaching, research, and service. Candidates at this level should demonstrate a successful track record in grant writing and publication and have national visibility in the profession.
Strong interdisciplinary knowledge of higher education, broad research skills, and an understanding of policies, institutions, and students in higher education are required of all candidates. The Department is especially interested in candidates with sustained engagement with communities that are under-represented in higher education, and with demonstrated ability to integrate this asset into teaching, scholarship, and program development. Candidates should also demonstrate success in advising doctoral students.
The Doctoral Program in Higher Education Administration provides a dynamic environment for faculty and graduate students to engage in nationally-recognized research, especially in areas related to access, equity, organizational change, public policy, and the scholarship of civic engagement. Faculty collaborate with staff in the New England Resource Center for Higher Education (www.NERCHE.org) to secure major foundation-funded projects to advance an innovative research agenda. The curriculum focuses on preparing higher education leaders who are committed to fostering, facilitating, and managing change in diverse settings.
